Join us as Center For Recorded Music celebrate International Jazz Day, Tuesday, April 30th 2024 at UMKC. We will have an afternoon of programs including special guests, classic jazz records, and live music.
Featured Program: Noon - 2pm C4RM celebrates the 65th Anniversary of Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come hosted by our special guest, Abe Goldstien. In 1959 Ornette Coleman unleashed upon the world The Shape of Jazz to Come. This album is about mood and tone, more than structure and rhythm, and helped launch the Free Jazz movement. It is in the Library of Congress, the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of all time, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015.
Abe Goldstien is the executive director of the Community Jazz Center of Greater Des Moines, a 26-year-old organization that celebrates the past, present and future of jazz in Des Moines with monthly student jam sessions, a volunteer big band, an annual Des Moines Jazz Hall of Fame event, a weekly e-newsletter, a Jazz Appreciation Month festival , student scholarships, and various other educational programs for students. He also hosts a 3 hour long jazz radio show on Iowa radio KFMG-FM.
Programming will continue throughout the day, please keep an eye here and on our social media for additional program material. This day long event is presented by Center For Recorded Music, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization bringing to life a new world-class cultural center and music education facility in Kansas City.
We have free admission for everyone to our programs from Noon-6pm, including snacks and drinks, but no alcohol.
